P90X update
P90X is the most intense workouts you'll ever get on a DVD workout program. I love the various workouts. Theres weight lifting exercises, plyometrics, yoga, kenpo, and ab exercises. I thought yoga was weird because the weird stretching and poses. I have a different take on it now because it totally uses all parts of your body. After a yoga workout, my legs are all wobbly and I'm drenched with sweat. Its pretty cool. I've done plyometrics before when I was on my high school volleyball team. But I don't remember plyometrics being this difficult, maybe because I'm older or maybe this workout is just more intense.
You're probably wondering, "when do you have time to do your workouts ?" I do it when the kids are napping after their lunch or after dinner and bathtime for the kids. Sometimes my kids will try to do some of the workouts with me like the jumping in plyometrics or the leg exercises. I'm always nervous if I'm lifting weights and they're near by. So I use the weight bands which are just as effective as the free weight dumbells.

Work what?
This stay at home Dad needs to get a job...well thats if anyone will hire me. Everyone is feeling the effects of this economic recession. Companies are cutting their employees and having the existing employees do more work than before. Not much hiring is being done. Consumers are actually saving their money and putting it in saving accounts or trying to get out of debt. I guess I could be a financial planner....nah, thats not my cup of tea. Or work at Walmart? No way, I don't think retail is my thing. But they give you best deals for stuff. Walmart is one of the few Fortune 500 companies that are going strong at this time. Consumers save money shopping at Walmart. There are many times that I go to Walmart and have a list of things I need and I come back with way more stuff because I think I should buy it because its cheap. I know just because I'm almost an MBA graduate you'd think that I was too good enough for these jobs. I'm almost about to settle for anything that pays good. One of my professors said that money is not a motivator for work, it is a satisfier. I think he meant that once you receive the pay you want you'll be happy, thus satisfied for a while. Then when you start spending more because you have more income you realize that you want or need to make more money. I forget the actual theory that this is called. There is truth in this theory.
I'm reading this book called "Balance Scorecard Step by Step for Government and Nonprofit Agencies" for my final class for my MBA program. Its not half bad, pretty interesting stuff. It kind of covers all lot of the material I learned. Well the business principles and models that are contained in the book make sense to me because of the things I learned from all my business classes.
Well this past couple years staying at home with my kids I learned a ton of stuff. Home management, morning tv schedules, meal planning, patience, and more patience. I sometimes wish I'd be working instead of being at home. I know for sure that my wife is much smarter than I am. She catches on to things quickly, meaning shes a better learner. She has this huge vocabulary and says words I heard once or studied once in my life time. Yeah, its because she reads a lot of books and plays crossword puzzles. Anyways my point being is that she could easily get her MBA or whatever graduate program she wants.

Daddy belly
I just saw the movie on DVD, "Run Fat Boy Run", it is hilarious. I laughed so hard with that movie. It kind of motivates me to continue to workout. Its about this out of shape and out of luck guy, Dennis who ran away from his girlfriend, Libby who was pregnant at the altar. Its now 5 years later and Dennis wants to run a marathon to earn the respect for Libby who is the mother of his 4 year old impressionable son and most of all to compete with her handsome boyfriend. Its British humor and I think its funny. I won't tell you what happens at the end. You have to find out for yourself.
The last movie I saw in the movie theater was High School Musical 3, Senior Year. It was surprisingly really good. I loved the singing and the dancing. The acting was pretty good. The best movie of the series. Yes, I have seen all 3 HSMs. I have the soundtracks. I have seen the first movie over 20 times. Its because of my daughter liked to watch it alot. Yeah, right.
Back to working out. I would love to get a 24 hour Fitness membership but its so crazy expensive. Hmm 4oo bucks for 3 years and I gotta pay up front, what if I don't go as often? Lose money if you're lazy. What a cool concept, pay a fee to work out for 1-3 years upfront. These guys that started gyms are smart. Yeah, diet can help too. I don't eat as much as I did in college. Just gotta eat smarter like an adult. I tend to eat my kids leftovers. I didn't know that men can gain weight eating they're children's left overs. There have been studies on this. Sorry I forgot the article title. Its just the Hawaiian culture, no waste especially food.

Video Games
Alright so you're wondering when do I have the time to play? I play at night when the kids are sleeping and at naptime. Yeah, I am suppose to be working out during naptime or clean the house during that time. So I've been up late or early in the morning playing till my eyes can't stay open. Video games is like an outlet for me, like working out. We have a Nintendo Wii also, I don't play it as much since I got the new Madden game. I'll get a PS3 after I get a HDTV. That will be next year Christmas time. We can't afford it so we won't buy it. I think preschool payments take priority then our entertainment gadgets. Oh, can't forget my student loan...one day we will buy a house....one day...some day.

The beach and playground wisdom
We had a great time being in Laie with my wife's side of the family. We stayed the entire last week there and had fun with another sister in law and her son. The best beach for the kids in the Laie Hau'ula area is Kakela beach, the Alligator rock side which is all the way to the right side of the beach. I heard that by Shark's Cove there is a spot where there's tide pools which is good for the kids also. I heard that Ko'olina Resort is a nice place also for the keiki.
Lupulu is grindz! Part Ua
Ingrediments:
Palm Corn beef (the round can, made in New Zealand)
Taro Leaves
Coconut milk (canned is okay)
Onions
Salt and pepper
Tin foil
Cake pan or foil pan
Sorry I didn't take any pictures.
Instructions:
- Open the cans with the can opener, this can be done with a knife. (I seen this done before but you kinda need strong and steady hands and a sharp knife. I seen this done with my knife by my roommate. Don't try it if you're a wimp and safety conscious.)
- Prep the tin foil, pulling out 2 sheets for one lupulu serving. Have the 2 sheets laying perpendicular, so you have like an "x".
- Cut the stalks off the taro leaves and place the leaves facing up on your "x" tinfoil. Maybe 5-10 taro leaves.
- Then shape the foil to a wide bowl with the leaves on it.
- Put the desired amount of corn beef onto the leaves.
- Put the desired amount of chopped onions and salt and pepper on the corn beef.
- Pour half to the whole can of the coconut milk on to the meat and onions.
- Then fold in the leaves.
- Fold down the tinfoil and try not to spill out the coconut milk.
- There you have one serving. It can be big or small depends how much leaves and meat you put inside. Repeat the making process for as much as want.
- Place the wrapped lupulu in the pan. If you have more than you can fit in the pan. Don't stack it on top of each other. Get another pan. I made that mistake because it won't steam evenly.
- Put in the oven for 400 degrees for 3 hours. If after 3 hours and you taste it and your tongue and throat is itchy, put it back in for a little longer.
Small kine tips
Where can you get taro leaves? Foodland and Tamura's have taro leaves. But I heard that a store called "Wong's" and another called "Masa's" has the best taro leaves. One is in Hau'ula and the other is either in Kahana or Kapahulu. I forget which is which. Both stores are along the Kamehameha Hwy. The store Masa's sells the best kine of coconut milk to cook your lupulu with. How I know all this? I asked my Tongan friend. Please leave comments if you have a better recipe or know where to get taro leaves in Utah.

The Little Princess Party
My wife was very creative for the activities. After the pool, the kids decorated foam visors with these little foam stickers that came with letters, floral designs, and butterflies. As you can see above Mikayla is modeling it well. She was so happy and thrilled to do a little craft activity. She just did everything on her own. My wife bought everything at Walmart.
After the visor decorating, it was...dipping oreos and pretzels in chocolate! My niece and I ate most of the things we were dipping. You just take some chocolate chip morsels put it in a microwave bowl. Then put in the microwave for a minute, then mix it and put it in the microwave again for another minute. Mix. Then dip. Oh yeah, the bowl is hot be careful. You can dip strawberries, bananas, anykind of fruit. After you dip your cookie or whatever, you put it on wax paper. To harden the chocolate just stick the wax paper of goodies in the fridge for a good half hour or so. I forgot that its kind of hard to transport the wax paper of chocolate covered goodies when there is no solid flat surface underneath. Don't forget to put a cookie sheet pan under it all. This little dipping technique comes from my mom. Again this little activity was my wife's brilliant and fun idea! I take no credit. I just had fun doing the activities.
We then ate lunch consisted of hot dogs, spam musubis, and chips. All of my daughter's favorite foods. All really simple to prepare and good on the budget. Soon after was the singing of Happy Birthday and blowing out the candles on the special doll cake. Mikayla was thrilled to see the doll cake and also she loves singing Happy Birthday. What kid doesn't like their birthday? Above you can see the wonderful doll cake crafted by my awesome wife. It was a tradition in my wife's family where their grandma would make a doll cake for each of her sisters for their birthdays. It was one of wife's favorite memories. The dress is the cake. You can't eat the doll. The whole process of making the doll cake is secret so I have to ask my wife.... okay I don't remember how she did it. I was keeping the kids occupied when she was making it...
The birthday girl opened presents and then we headed outside for the pinata smashing.
We were all ready for a nap when it ended. Man, the adults were all tired. There was my sister in law, my mother in law, my wife, and I. My daughter was happy and estatic so that meant we did good. Thanks ladies.

Home made Paper mache princess castle
Here is the paper mache princess castle. When my daughter saw it she said, "Oooooo!" with her eyes wide open. So she liked it and thats all that matters. I know it doesn't look professional but I'm pretty proud of it and saved some cash on this fun little project.
When the kids were trying to knockout the candy from this castle it took a while. I thought this thing was so fragile it would break at the first whack. Not so. After 3 swings from 3 kids about 3 times and a few whacks from my mother in law, the pinata finally let all the candy out. Good fun! I'll post some more about the princess later.

Intellectual Stimulation
When I found out how much paperwork needed to be done for the job that my wife did, I was glad I did not fit the job profile. I learned my lesson. Never ever apply to the same job as your spouse, you will feel hurt if the your spouse gets it. And a whole bunch of other reasons.
Now for the
intellectual stimulation part of this blog. I remember a few friends' wives that were stay at home moms said that they wished they could do something like what I was doing, going to school. They said they would like to have some intellectual conversations and ocassionally learn new concepts here and then. Don't get me wrong when you are the primary care giver you are busy and it can be physically draining. The problem is that you are talking to little ones that still don't understand the concept of tomorrow or aren't potty trained.Guys remember when you come home from work and your wife talks to you about stuff that you think doesn't matter and all you want to do is sit on the couch or your favorite chair to watch TV and relax? Well if shes a stay at home mom or is with the kids more than you, you got to stop and listen. Really listen, meaning try to understand why this converstion is important to her and why she is talking to you. It may just be a way for her to vent or talk about what happened in the course of her day. This is the way a woman connects with you. Or she just wants to talk to an "adult", she's been talking to kids all day. This listening stuff goes vice versa for women that are working and dads that are staying at home.
How to stimulate your mind?
- Read a book or magazines that interests you. Library, borrow free books. I like to read magazines about business news and trends.
- Learn something new.
- Learn how to do something, buy a do it yourself book or go online to find out how to fix something like your kitchen sink. I still have to learn how to replace a door.
- Maybe take some night courses at a community college to learn a foreign language or learn a new subject or skill.
- Learn how to play an instrument or brush up your guitar skills. Who doesn't like playing music or listening to music? Plus the kids will get a kick out of it.

The Zoo for Mikayla's "Special Day"
I think most of the time she spent at the zoo was at the little play ground. She enjoyed herself playing with the other kids. So she had a little Mommy time. Camden and I left them and went to the Sahara exhibit. We saw all of Camden's favorite animals. When he saw the giraffes he said, "Oooo!" When he saw the rhinos he said, "Cooool!" And after that he said the same things for all the animals. He loves the Baby Einstein Baby Noah DVD, which shows all kinds of different animals. Our boy loves to name the animals and make their animal sounds.
We ate some gellato, the Italian ice, I love that stuff. I thought that no one would find out, but my wife recognized that the boy's lips were blue.
After the zoo we headed over to Farrell's, a ice cream shop. The Mikayla was exhausted from playing and wasn't her usual excited self. I told the waitress that it was her birthday. You get free icecream and a little song with it. When the waitress and others that were there for their song, Mikayla just had a plain face, expressionless. We also ordered a banana split, it was expensive but was really good! I pretty much ate 90% of the entire thing. I highly recommend Farrell's. I had the pastrami burger and onion rings which was ono! My wife had her Reuben sandwich, her favorite! I am still full from lunch and had no desire to eat dinner.
Overall we had a fun great "Special Day" for Mikayla.
Free fun
For the puppet show there was this lady that did finger puppets to Eensy weensy spider, No more monkeys jumping on the bed, the wheels on the bus, 5 little monkeys swinging on the tree and Old McDonald had a farm. There was the finale of the marionette puppets. Man there were tons of little kids there I think like 50 of them and lots of moms. And maybe 3 Dads. Sorry no pictures were allowed during the performance. I mean it wasn't that super professional anyways, but whatever. But all the kids there loved it.
Mikayla loved the marionettes because she loves the scene in the "Sound of Music" musical, where the Von Trap kids are doing the marionette play for their father. Mikayla calls it the "Yodel lay he hoo song".
So the library has some cool free entertainment there. Plus its cool there, physically cool, free AC. They had a reading program where you get a little treat if you read a couple of books to your kids. Last week was animal crackers.
Also another note of cool stuff at the library besides the cool free books to borrow is that you can rent DVDs for a week long for a dollar! Man, we get 3-4 at a time everytime we visit! You know we get the Disney classics or some lame ones that the kids want. Okay, I picked out the lame ones...by accident.
Yeah, I don't go to Mother's group. Thats something that the kids would enjoy but I feel weird going there without my wife. I was invited a few times but I felt "unmanly" whenever I attended. Plus what am I gonna talk about? "So you guys seen the game last night?" The real conversation will be, "Oh my husband does the craziest things." Uh, awkward. Yeah so I would like to make a Father's group but I'm the only one I know that is a stay at home father besides my cousin who lives in Laie.
I think that as a stay at home father you need to have time to let out some steam or relax. Its the same for all care takers. My time to relax is volleyball. I'm lucky my wife lets me play once a week. Physical exercise helps my mind release endorphins to help me think better and I just feel good. So I know when we switch roles, when I work and she stays home with the kids, she can have time for herself. She still needs that time now. We all do!
